SPRING Investiture

The first Spring Investiture celebrated outside the seat of the Brotherhood of Cava in Sant Sadurní was in 1995 when about one hundred Brotherhood Members moved to Euskadi, where in the Campillo Warehouses of La Guardia (Àlava) the former lehendakari Jose Antonio Ardanza was conferred the title of Honour Brotherhood Member and the Minister of Industry, Agriculture and Fishing for the Basque government, Javier Retegui, the President of the Basque of Food Quality Label, Jesus Llona and the presidents of the D. O. of Txakoli Getaria and Queso Idiazábal, Andrés Txueka and Antón Perez de Calleja, respectively, were conferred the title of merit Brotherhood Members. The day after, in a united act with these organizations, took place the brotherly union between the Txakolí, the CAVA and the Idiazabal cheese, sealing thus the union of the wine and gastronomic culture between Catalunya and Euskadi.

In May 1996, the president of the Xunta de Galicia, Manuel Fraga Iribarne was conferred the title of Honour Brotherhood Member within the Spring Investiture Act that the Brotherhood celebrated, for the second consecutive year, in an outer autonomous community. The investiture took place in the Real Dining room of the Hostal Parador Reyes Católicos of Santiago de Compostela. In the same ceremony the Minister of Agriculture, Cattle and Mounts for the Galician government, Tomás Perez Vidal, the Secretary General of Communication of the Xunta, Jesus Perez Varela, the mayor of Santiago, Xerardo Estévez and the mayor of Cambdos, Santiago Tirado and the president of the Regulating Council of Rías Baixas, Soledad Bueno were also conferred the title of Merit Brotherhood Members. The Minister of Agriculture, Loyola de Palacio, the Minister of Agriculture for the Generalitat de Catalunya, Francesc Xavier Marimón, and the State Secretary for Territorial Administrations, Jorge Fernandez Diaz, among others, attended the Act. During the expedition, in the city of Cambados, took place the brotherly union with El Capítulo Serenísimo del Vino do Albariño (Regulating Advice of the D.O. Rías Baixas) that ended up with the symbolic union of both wines in a bottle that later was lacerated and, according to tradition, must not be opened within one hundred years.

Andalucía was the selected Community to celebrate the Spring Investiture in 1997, celebrated in May the 23rd. Nearly two hundred Brotherhood Members attended the Act. In Seville, the President of the Junta de Andalucía, Manuel Chaves, was conferred the title of Honour Brotherhood Member. During the investiture dinner in the Mozarabic Palace located in Villa Luisa, served by the prestigious restaurateur Rafael Julià, the Minister of Agriculture, Industry and Tourism of the Junta, Paulino Plata, Guillermo Gutiérrez and Jose Nuñez, the director of the RTVA, Eduard Abellán, the president of the Consejo Regulador of Jerez-Xèrez-Sherry and Manzanilla of San Lúcar, Rafael Coloma and the mayoress of Seville, Soledad Becerril (who could not attend the act and was represented by the deputy mayor of the city council) were invested Merit Brotherhood Members.

The day after, in the seat of the Consejo Regulador de Xerés, took place the brotherly union act between the CAVA, the Sherry and the Huelva Cured Ham, in which three representative warehouses of the sherry producers sector, Mr Luís Caballero, Mr Pedro Barbadillo and Mr Beltrán Domecq were conferred the title of Merit Brotherhood Members.

Jaume Matas, President of the Balearic Islands was conferred the title of Honour Brotherhood Member on May the 8th, 1998 during the Spring Investiture celebrated in Palma de Mallorca in the incomparable frame of Ses Cases de Sa Font Seca. In the same act, the Conseller Josep Juan Cardona and the mayor of Palma, Joan Fageda, were conferred the title of Merit Brotherhood Members: The day after, in the Bodegas Franja Roja, in Binissalem, the hundred Brotherhood Members that moved to the Balearic Islands participated in the brotherly union of the Brotherhood with the Sobrassada of Majorca, the cheese of Mahón and wines with D.O. Binissalem.

Madrid was the chosen scenario of last year's Spring Investiture; the president of the House of Commons, Federico Trillo, was conferred the title of Honour Brotherhood Member on July the 2nd 1999, during the celebration of the Spring Investiture that took place in the real hall of the Ritz Hotel, in Madrid.

Some outstanding personalities of the world of mass media like the general manager of RNE, Diego Armario; the general manager of TVE, Pío Cabanillas; the executive president of Europa Press, Luis Martin; the general manager of Onda Zero, Antonio Martinez, and Sebastián Alvaro, director of the program Al filo de lo imposible (in one from his expeditions to the North Pole they drunk Cava) were also conferred the title of Merit Brotherhood Member in that ceremony.

The director of Club Gourmets, Francisco Lopez Canis; Manuel Quintanero, director of Restauradores; Andrés Proensa, director of Vinos España, Juan.José Delgado, director of Marco Real; Cristino Álvarez, journalist of El Tiempo and Agencia EFE and the journalist of El País, M. Jesús Gil de Antuñano were also conferred the title of Brotherhood Members for their gastronomic merits.

After the investiture ceremony, the night ended with an excellent dinner and the performance of a soprano.

Last weekend, the Chapter Council of the Sant Sadurní Cava Brotherhood, together with one hundred and twenty-five members of the Brotherhood, travelled to the autonomous region of Castilla y León to celebrate the Spring Investiture.

On May the 19th, Friday, at 9 o'clock in the evening, the Spring Investiture of the Sant Sadurní Cava Brotherhood took place at the Restaurant Horno de Asar "El Hueco", in Valladolid. This year, the president of the Junta de Castilla y León, Mr. Juan José Lucas, was invested Honour Member of the Brotherhood, and he swore "to be loyal to the Cava and defend it and magnify it in all places and at all times".

On May the 20th, Saturday, the brotherhood members went to the Avellaneda Palace, placed in Peñaranda de Duero, to celebrate the twinning of cava and the D.O. Ribera del Duero wines. This twinning was sealed with a toast between the president of the D.O. Ribera del Duero, Pablo Peñalba, and the president of the Cava Brotherhood, Mr. Joan Juvé.

During the trip, the members of the brotherhood enjoyed interesting visits to the wine cellars of the D.O. Ribera del Duero: Protos S.A. Torremilanos de Pablo Peñalba and Condado de Haza.
