XVII ANNIVERSARY OF THE CAVA WEEK

The heart of fellow-members, Cava-makers and all lovers of Cava (champagne type sparkling wine), beats at the rhythm of the events and concerns that, day after day, all through the year, provide our vineyards, our cellars, Cava factories and the progress of sales of our unique and singular starred wine.

That is why, all or us who live for the Cava with great enthusiasm, a feeling that the guild of wine butlers intends to bring together through leisured activities, desire with joy and participatory spirit our "great annual festival".

The will of the Town Council of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia to make coincide the organization of the II CAVATAST (taste of Cava) with this anniversary, as they successfully did in its first edition, will highlight, even more, the echoes and popularity of the XVII Week of Cava.

The Meeting Board, together with the young fellow-members, have arranged with fervent hope and great care our "great annual festival".On the magical Saturday night , October 10, at the Town Council square, crammed full of people, the genteel Miss Paula Vázquez, accompanied by her briedsmaids, will be crowned "The Queen of Cava". Xavier Grasset , a well-known journalist and a Cava enthusiast, will proclaim the beginning of the festival.

The autumnal investiture of the distinguished ophthalmologist Honourable Professor Joaquim Barraquer Moner as "Fellow-member of Honour", as well as the investiture of the "Young fellow-member", The Gastronomic Supper at "Cavas Hill" in Moja, the XII Tren del Cava (Train of Cava) and the "YOUNG PEOPLE'S NIGHT", determine the main leisured celebrations of a whole WEEK OF CAVA full of manifestations that, together with the "XVI International Congress of Cava" and the "XVII Painting contest "Country of Cava", accredit and vouch for the cultural interests of the WEEK.

One more year, we are looking forward to seeing you in our festival. Let's try to accomplish, with our participation and enthusiasm,a successful week and that the means of communication broadcast all and sundry about our joy, inviting everyone to a toast with our magical starred wine: the Cava.

Sunday, September 27

At 8 p.m. presentation of the poster of "The Week of Cava" in the "Catalonian exhibition of Wines and Cavas" held at Maremàgnum, Barcelona. Party time and performance of Falcons del Cava with the presence of the Queen of Cava and the famous painter Xavier Serra de Ribera, the poster's creator.

Tuesday, Setember 29

At 9 p.m., presentation of the XVII Week of Cava at the local "Luz de Gas", in 246 Muntaner St., Barcelona. Several authorities, some fellow-members and other guests will attend the presentation. Finally,some Cava and an aperitif will be served.

Thursday, October 8

At 9 p.m., prize ceremony of the "Shopwindows Contest" of the shopkeeper's union of Sant Sadurní at the "House of Cava" in Torre-Ramona.

Saturday, October 10

At 10 a.m., at Cavas Freixenet in Sant Sadurní, "V exhibition of Cava Plates"

At 7 p.m., opening of the exhibition dedicated to the world of Cava, presented at the XVII Painting Contest "Country of Cava", held at the exhibition galleries shown in the index of this leaflet and in the chapel of the old Hospital of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia.

At 7.30 p.m., Popular Festival, with the participation of the giants, "bastoners" (traditional dance with sticks), drummers, children clad in traditional catalan costumes, "filocheristas", "gralles" (catalan wind instrument), the Falcons of Cava and the band Lira Ampostina. The journey of the popular festival will begin in Manuel Raventós square and
will continue along Diputació St., Sant Antoni St., Quatre Cantons, Cavallers St. until the Town Council square.

At 8.30 p.m., in the Town Council square, arrival of the Queen of Cava, Miss Paula Vázquez, a well-known journalist and a TV presenter. The Queen's followers and her bridesmaids will arrive at the square in ancient cars and escorted by the riding body of the Traffic Police of Barcelona.

Once in the Town Council, they will be welcomed by Joan Juvé i Santacana, president of the Cava fraternity of Sant Sadurní, and by the major, Joan Amat i Solé. Then the proclamation of the XVII Week of Cava will be announced from the balcony of the Town Council by the well-known journalist Xavier Grasset, a member of the group "El Terrat" and presenter of the Catalan Television TV-3.
After the proclamation of the Week, the Queen of Cava 1998 will be crowned and a glass of the first grape juice (mosto) of the present harvest will be offered to her. The grapes were pressed by School Children of Sant Sadurní.

Next, at the "Era del Guineu", Fireworks accompanied by a band. Lastly, some Cava and Coca (a catalan sweet) for everyone.

At 10 p.m., in the house of Cava Torre-Ramona, supper of honor offered by the Cava Fraternity of Sant Sadurní to the Queen of Cava, her bridesmaids, the announcer, all the authorities and representatives of invited institutions as well as the jury and the artists who have won a prize in the Painting Contest sponsored by La Caixa. The prizes will be given during the supper.

At midnight, in the "Ateneu's" hall, "Great Young Nigth of Cava", with the participation of the group "Ja t'ho diré". All the public attending the concert will be given some Cava, some Coca and a commemorative glass of Cava. Orchestra Carlos Hammond.

Sunday , October 11

At 8 a.m., in Cavas Castellblanch gathering of cyclists, who will take part in the "Cycle-touristic Run", that will take place around the "Country of Cava".

At 10 a.m., in the billiards club called "Capital del Cava", a billiards tournament between the teams: Club Billar Piera and Club Billar Capital del Cava.

At 7 p.m., in the Ateneu's hall , performance of "l'Esbart Dansaire Egarenc" (traditional catalan dances), free entrance.


Monday, October 12

At 9 a.m., in the park of la Rambla , IV Petanca (a balls' game) tournament Week of Cava.

At 9 a.m., from the Sants train station (Barcelona),. Departure of the XIII Special Train to the Country of Cava, with a capacity of one thousand passengers. During the trip, the band Batucada Brasileña will play some tunes and everyone will be offered some Cava.
On arriving in Sant Sadurní, the passengers will be able to visit the Cava factories that they wish to, they will be accompanied by the following groups of giants: group of giants from Anglès (Girona), Giants from Les Cabanyes (High Penedès), Giants from Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Giants of the Cava; this festivity day is the only one of this kind since the Cava factories are opened to the public in general. The tickets, all free, can be obtained in all the branches of Caixa Penedès, in Barcelona, Hospitalet, Cornellà, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Molins de Rei and Martorell. Along with the free ticket, another ticket will be on sale ,2.800 pts., for the meal that will be offered to all the passengers in the Ateneu's hall in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia.

At 2.30 p.m. in the Ateneu's hall, a "Cava Lunch" to all the passengers from the Train of Cava, with the orchestra Els Àngels.

At 6 p.m., from the train station of Sant Sadurní, return trip to Barcelona in the Train of Cava (see special programme).


Tuesday, October 13

At 8 p.m., reception at the Cavas Hill in Moja (Olèrdola). Visit to the cava cellars and an aperitif offered by Cavas Hill.

At 10 p.m., Great Gastronomic Supper, served in the same cellars by recognized restaurants: Cal Isidre (Barcelona), Joan Gatell (Cambrils), Joan Pique (Castell d'Aro), Hotel Restaurant Can Boix (Peramola), Reno (Barcelona), Avi Pau (Cunit), Sweetshop Escribà (Barcelona), the supper will be served by the gourmets from restaurant Paradís.

Note: All the celebrations will begin punctually. Everybody must dress in a formal way, men must wear a dinner-jacket.


Thursday, October 15

At the Fraternity venue from 9 a.m. onwards, XVI International Congress of Cava, with both important local and foreign specialists who will introduce their respective lectures (see special programme).


Friday, October 16

At 9 p.m., in Torre-Ramona house of Cava, aperitif and welcome to the "Fellow-member of honor", the "Solemn fellow-members", and new fellow-members that will be recognized by the fraternity.
Then, at the Torre-Ramona square, with the presence of some authorities , some fellow-members of the fraternity, the Queen of Cava and her bridesmaids, XVII Act of Autumnal Investiture, where the honourable Professor Doctor Joaquim Barraque Moner, will be distinguished as a fellow-member of honor. Next a formal supper will be served.

Note: All the celebrations will begin punctually. Everybody must dress in a formal way, men must wear a dinner-jacket.


Saturday, October 17

At 9 p.m., in the House of Cava, Autumnal Investiture of the Young Fellow-members, where a new FELLOW-MEMBER OF HONOR, will be distinguished.
Next, a formal supper will be served.
